Why Is Nanogrinding Becoming Increasingly Critical in Ink and Coatings? Boyee Industrial bead Mills and Turnkey EPC Solutions

With the continuous development of automotive coatings, industrial coatings, inkjet inks, and functional coatings, the ink and coating industries are placing higher demands on material fineness, dispersion uniformity, slurry stability, and batch consistency.

Pigments, fillers, and functional particles are prone to agglomeration, so the following issues must be addressed during production: pigment wetting, agglomeration and deagglomeration, particle size control, temperature rise during grinding, slurry stability, and scale-up. Consequently, the synergy among mixing, dispersion, nano-grinding, and the entire production line process is becoming a critical aspect of ink and coating manufacturing.

1. Ink and Coating Grinding: More Than Just “Grinding to a Fine Particle Size”

In pigment, color paste, and functional coating systems, bead mills and nano-bead mills are not only used for particle refinement but also to achieve agglomeration and deagglomeration as well as uniform dispersion.

In actual production, the following factors must be considered simultaneously: pigment wetting, particle size distribution, slurry viscosity, temperature rise control, and dispersion stability. Insufficient grinding leaves coarse particles and agglomerates, while excessive grinding may increase temperature rise, energy consumption, and risks to system stability.

Therefore, the key to nano-grinding in ink and coating production lies in establishing a stable grinding and dispersion process window tailored to the specific material system.

2. Different Pigments Require Different Grinding Strategies

Ink and coating material systems are complex.

For carbon black, the focus is on wetting, agglomeration, and fine dispersion;

for titanium dioxide, inorganic pigments, and functional fillers, the focus is on particle size distribution and dispersion uniformity;

for organic pigments, high-end color pastes, and inkjet inks, the focus is more on fine particle control, color strength, and paste stability.

Therefore, the structure of the bead mill, grinding media, rotational speed, flow rate, and circulation method must be selected based on particle size, hardness, viscosity, solids content, target fineness, and production capacity.

3. Pre-dispersion Determines Subsequent Grinding Efficiency

Before ink and coating materials undergo nano-grinding, they must go through the following steps: metering and batching → powder feeding → wetting → mixing → pre-dispersion

Insufficient wetting and pre-dispersion in the upstream process will increase the load on the subsequent bead mill and affect grinding efficiency and product consistency. Boyee can configure inline mixers, high-speed dispersers, nano bead mills, and twin-planetary mixers according to different material systems to ensure a seamless process transition from pre-dispersion to fine grinding.

5. From bead Mills to Smart Production Lines for Inks and Coatings

Once large-scale production begins, companies focus not only on the performance of individual machines but also on production capacity matching, continuous conveying, process integration, low residue, parameter traceability, and batch consistency.

Based on project process requirements, Boyee can configure the following workflow: unpacking and feeding → metering and blending → pre-dispersion → nano-grinding → filtration → filling → automated control.

It also integrates online mixing, temperature control, material conveying, process monitoring, and intelligent control systems.

Focusing on inks, coatings, color pastes, and fine chemical materials, Boyee Industrial provides engineering solutions ranging from experimental validation and process optimization to core equipment, smart production lines, and turnkey EPC projects. From pigment dispersion to stable pastes; from nano bead mills to smart production lines.

Boyee Industrial empowers the ink and coatings industry to achieve refined, continuous, and large-scale manufacturing.
